Networking Solutions for Broadcast Applications

CB006E_Cover_DataCenterWith broadcasters needing to meet demand for more bandwidth to support the latest high-definition transmission and growth of digital media content, many are moving to fiber-based networking solutions for delivering on-demand access and storing huge amounts of content that must be available at all times to producers, editors and directors. Data centers play a major role in the broadcasting industry, and with our combined long-term experience in both networking and broadcasting, Belden is uniquely positioned to provide support throughout the planning, deployment and post-installation processes of broadcast networks. We offer an extensive range of end-to-end fiber and copper networking solutions for use in the broadcast environment.

For more information, download the Capability Bulletin here. We will also be displaying a fully loaded networking rack at the IBC show next month in Amsterdam.

CSV Training for Broadcasting Center Europe

Broadcast_ApplicationsOn July 23, 2014, Certified System Vendor (CSV) training was held for 13 individuals from Broadcasting Center Europe (BCE). BCE is a major system integrator in EMEA who serves about 400 clients in various broadcasting sectors, including TV, radio, film, advertising, telecom and public services. The training took place at EVS Broadcast Equipment’s headquarters in Liege, Belgium. Founded in 1994, EVS has achieved success in compressed video and audio data processing with its recorders and video servers becoming the dominant standard for broadcasters worldwide. BCE recently won a project for EVS that involves merging several different locations in Belgium into one large building.

For this project, we not only offered the traditional broadcast products, but also the networking infrastructure product range to meet the increased amount of IT-related equipment making its way into broadcast applications. The training provided BCE with an understanding of Belden’s best practice system design and recommendations for cost-effective installation and deployment in the field, while allowing them to provide EVS with our comprehensive 25-year system warranty for this recent project.

Tales of the Digital Cliff

B51_Cliff_Edge_LRIn his latest blog, Steve Lampen provides some insight about the “digital cliff” and how to find it and avoid it. The digital cliff is the point where any digital signal cannot be resolved, and most people assume it is because the cable is too long and the signal has attenuated beyond a point of recovery. But there are a dozen factors that can affect digital signals.

For low data rate signals, the digital cliff is so far away that it is typically not a concern and virtually any type of cable will work. But for higher data rate signals, the type of cable used matters. Steve goes on to explain how it must be the right cable for the job and it must be sized properly for the application. He also points out that using the wrong cable can result in both reflective loss and attenuation, or what he refers to as a “double whammy.”

Stay tuned for Tales of the Cliff (Part 2) in our next newsletter.
