Fiber’s Dicey Future: The Long and the Short of IT
With an explosion of connected devices, more data than ever is being transmitted and stored via optical networking in the data center. There is more data, and more data is being shared between applications in the massive, high-density virtualized environments of cloud computing. As we enter the era of the “Internet of Things,” the I/O portion of the equation will evolve like never before. What does this mean for the cabling infrastructure inside the datacentre? Should it be all singlemode or is OM4 multimode the best bet?
Every datacentre is unique, and balancing short-term and long-term needs is complex. Read this blog post for a look at current and future trends toward fibre in the datacentre.
Two Videos on the Future of Fibre
Two videos from Dwayne Crawford, Belden’s Fibre Connectivity Product Line Manager, explore and discuss emerging trends in the Fibre market. In Future of Fibre Optics Connectivity, he talks about the trends that are driving the future of fibre optics connectivity. A second video, Future Fibre Protocol, explores the trends that are driving the future of fibre based protocols.
Fiber Channel Testing: With or Without Patch Cords?
Discussions surrounding whether or not to test a fiber channel with the patch cords have been unclear. In reality, the main deciding factor for whether to test the channel with the patch cords included or to just test the permanent link depends on the specification provided by the end user or their consultant. What do you need to do if the question still remains as to whether or not patch cords should be included in channel testing after all the specs have been checked? Let’s take a closer look…

Did you know?
A common estimate in the cable installation industry is that the cost to remove and re-install cable in a typical building application is at least 4X greater than the initial cost of cable. For example, on a project where cable value is $50K, the cost of removal and re-installation easily exceeds $200K, which does not include the cost of new cable. An installer and end-user who make a cable choice in order to save $1-2K accept the risk of a $250K replacement cost, including the cost of new cable. Product failures can be very expensive. Specifying the right cables from the beginning is essential.
In this month’s newsletter, we take a look at long-term fibre cabling strategy decisions, the cost of re-installations, and how cable life impacts fire safety. Clearly, Belden does more than carry signals from point A to point B. A Frost & Sullivan analyst summed it up best: “Belden is not just a supplier of signal transmission products, but a true strategic business partner delivering solutions that make end-user facilities perform more efficiently and profitably.” That is the long-term value that we bring to our customers. In the meantime, happy reading!
